This aggressive action is the latest and most extreme decision taken by President Putin towards former Soviet states; it follows the invasion of Georgia in 2008\, the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014\, and ever-increasing interference in the politics of Belarus\, Kazakhstan and other CSTO members. The conflict has developed steadily with Ukraine putting up a stout defence and holding Kyiv and other major cities against all expectations but the end is far from within sight.\n\nHow will the crisis develop? It is clear that this event will come to define the next decade; the effect it has already had on the thinking of individuals across the world is more than apparent. It is also clear that this is an issue that has resonated with the Oxford Community and with our members. We thus feel that we have a duty to facilitate a discussion on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine\, the build-up to it\, its geopolitical significance\, and what we in the United Kingdom should be doing to help.\n\n\nWe are therefore delighted to announce that at 14:00 on Wednesday 2nd February\, we will be hosting a Panel Discussion on Ukraine with several guest speakers:\n\n• Mr Robert Brinkley CMG (Formerly HM Ambassador to Ukraine and Head of the Ukrainian Institute)\n\n• Professor Neil MacFarlane (a world expert in the international relations of the Former Soviet Union and a professor at St. Anne’s College)\n\n• Further speakers are clarifying their availability and will be announced on our Instagram in the coming days.\n\nThis panel will be followed by an ‘Open Despatch Box’ discussion where we encourage all members to give their thoughts on the unfolding crisis. There will be a collection in aid of charities supporting the Ukrainian government and refugees throughout the event. We encourage any member to get in touch with us with ideas for how we can support the Ukrainian people at this time and how best we can discuss the matter at hand.\n\nThe Ukrainian people remain in our thoughts and prayers\, The Standing Committee of the Oxford Union Society URL:https://oxford-union.org/event/ukraine-panel/ CATEGORIES:Other ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://oxford-union.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/274557098_5238480056186320_4863854601536551488_n.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20220302T170000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20220302T180000 DTSTAMP:20220315T060005 CREATED:20220119T200646Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220119T201417Z UID:17626-1646240400-1646244000@oxford-union.org SUMMARY:Stavros Lambrinidis DESCRIPTION:Stavros Lambrinidis\nFormer Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece \nEU ambassador to the United States since 2019\, Stavros Lambrinidis is a Greek lawyer and politician. Throughout history\, academics have debated — and activists have pushed — the limits of legitimate protest. From pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong to Extinction Rebellion\, the boundaries of necessity appear to be shifting. Faced with civil disobedience and activists treating mass arrests as the price of doing business\, there are calls to curtail the right to protest. Is violent protest a legitimate tool or an unjustifiable threat? Where are the red lines when protesting — and should we cross them? \n  \nProposition \nAislinn Pulley \nCo-executive director at the Chicago Torture Justice Centre and co-founder of Black Lives Matter Chicago. This historic change allowed inspiring women such as Benazir Bhutto\, former Pakistani Prime Minister\, to lead the society and host era-defining figures such as Her Majesty The Queen\, Mother Teresa\, Madeleine Albright\, and Malala Yousafzai\, for crucial conversations. As the Oxford Union celebrates International Women’s Day\, we have invited key figures from the Society’s history to reflect on the role of student activism. How can students drive change in their communities to increase gender equality\, and how can debating and free speech be used as a tool to achieve this end? Despite this\, some fundamental questions remain unanswered. Can one woman achieve it all: sexual freedom\, career success\, relationships\, and alongside all that\, an unspoiled feminist scorecard? The worlds of choice feminism and corporate feminism continue to maintain that women can ‘have it all’ within the structures of the existing system\, but new waves of feminist activists seek to explode the myth of multitasking. Is ‘having it all’ a feminist war cry\, or an impossible target invented by the patriarchy to keep women overworked and uncomplaining?\n\nSpeakers\n\nProposition\n\nEmily Thornberry- Emily Thornberry is a Labour MP who has previously served as shadow foreign secretary and shadow secretary of state. From 1985 to 2005\, she worked as a human rights lawyer before rising to prominence under Ed Miliband’s leadership.\n\nOpposition\n\nMitch Oliver- Mitch Oliver is the vice president of Stonewall\, and has sat on the Board of the UK business for several years. She is also the vice president of marketing at Mars Chocolate having joined their graduate scheme and has been named Marketer of the Year.\n\nSara Tate- Until June 2021\, Sara Tate was the CEO of a prominent advertising agency\, TBWALondon. She left to develop a consultancy advising companies on how to change their workplace culture. Tate is also a founding member of the London Two Percent Club\, which aims to resolve the underrepresentation of women in senior positions.
